My experience with coaching….

It doesn’t matter what we are talking about, coaching is something that has allowed me and so many others to achieve so many goals. My most successful years have been when I had someone to mentor or coach me. I want to discuss those experiences and learn more about yours!

First, athletics and health! I grew up playing sports my entire life and did pretty well. I was able to end up playing football at Michigan State University after high school. In high school our coaches were pretty good but my father was really a huge influence on how to push myself, getting uncomfortable and being ok with that, and most importantly what direction to go to get better. He would whoop me in a pickup game, followed by taking me to another pickup game where I was playing kids 3-5 years older than me, and then give me teachable advice in those moments. That helped drive my development not just as an athlete but as someone who is not ok being in my comfort zone. Then I got to college and my grandfather helped a ton. Before I started at Michigan State he would drive me to my personal trainer 3 times per week. He never tried to overstep but the amount of consistency and encouragement continued me on a path that was again, striving for more. Finally, my coaches at Michigan State challenged me, yelled at me, and loved me. Everything I needed to make it through 4 grueling years of trying to play and having surgeries.

Second, business! After college I started to dive into business and realized that I did not have a desire to work for someone, but impact through creation and execution. But what does that mean? How do I start? How do I not go broke? Those were questions that I was trying to answer myself for years. I plugged away and did pretty well, but every step was a grind, because I hadn;t been there. I knew what to do, but how to do it and how to do it efficiently was brand new to me. So finally fast forward to 2017-2018, we had hit a breaking point with my first startup. It was do or die. We had just shy of $10k in the bank and no new way to turn it around. So what did we decide to do? Go back to the days of athletics. What was the common theme to my success before??? I always had someone that had done what I was trying to do point me in the right direction. I still had to go out and DO IT! So we hired a mentor and ended up making more money every month from 2018-2020. It was amazing to see what we could do with just regular check-in’s and focus.

Now, I am going to try to keep this a little brief so I won’t get too detailed, but those experiences showed me why I will always surround myself with people who are striving for more and always have a coach or mentor for every aspect of my life. It allowed me to level up fast and to cut through some of the things that I didn’t have to suffer through because my coach showed me how to get there more efficiently. So, although I have now run multiple businesses since I was 23 years old and have worked out since I was 12 years old, I still have a set of mentors for my businesses who are incredible and I still use a coach to program my workouts. You do not have to do everything yourself. Yes, I can write an amazing workout program for my clients, but usually that puts me on the back burner, so having mine written and then having regular follow-ups about it has allowed me to continue staying in great shape. The same goes for business, my mentors are not coming up with some new age way to make money, they simply keep me accountable to get done what I need to!

Ok, so that was more long-winded than I had hoped for my first post about this but if you are still with me, I would love to hear about your experience.

Do you use a coach or mentor in certain aspects of your life, if so, which parts and how has that gone?

If you don’t, is there a reason or something specific you are looking for in a coach?
